Statement of Intent
I aim to produce a Profolio of work demonstrating my ideas , development , creative work and reflection based around the theme ' Materials ' at the end of my exam prep time I plan to develop my final images in Photoshop and produce an evaluation.
For my initial research I will start by looking into Photographers that use material in their work. At the moment I have chosen three photographers I want to look at. I aim to research Alma Haser , Lee Mckenna and Katherine D Crone because they fit within my theme. What I really like about Alma Haser's photography is how her work is very unique and she uses contrasting colours and experiments with her ideas further by cutting and adding materials to her images. I might use these techniques to inspire my own work.
I am also inspired by the work of Lee Mckenna because I like the way she uses old materials to frame her images that creates an antique style which is something I might look at in my work another thing that I like about his work is that he uses lots of arts and crafts to his images to create an original work.
Another photographer who I'm interested researching is Katherine D Crone because , I really like the materials in layers that she uses in her final outcomes , they are very soft and gentle and has a calm vibe to it.
When I chose this theme my initial thoughts were to take images of family , objects and nature which I could then print out and develop by adding materials on top or around them inspired by the artists I'm looking at.
To show progression through my work I will start by looking carefully at the work of my chosen photographers and I will also make mood boards to inspire my first Photoshoots. To be successful I know i will have to make a real effort to bring in a range of different props which I will set up and light carefully in a studio setting to get the results I want. I may also need to take home a camera if I want to capture images of my family or friends
I would like to experiment with a wide range of materials within my work.

Analysis
Content
This picture is a landscape. In this image their is a man wearing a khaki green t shirt , there's a flower replacing his face which caught my attention because it's unique and looks different to other pieces of work I've seen before. She has also used vibrant and contrasting colours.
Composition
The main focus point In this image Is definitely the pink flower, because it is quite central and it also stands out against the white background and green t shirt.
This photo has a shallow depth of field because it is a studio shot using white background close to the model. The man is placed on a soft white background and his green t shirt against the pink flower creates a good contrast that makes the image stand out .In this picture the lighting is bright, it creates a hard contrast of colours which is a technique I might use in my own work.
They haven't really used rules of third, however because the man is at the bottom of the image you do get a sense of scale. My eye is drawn to the flower it makes the photo look exotic and creative in it's own way. She has also used a sense of scale of the flower on the man's face because it is so out of proportion.
In my opinion because this is a studio shot I think the photographer will have had a tripod for the camera and when I take my own images I think I will need to use this myself.
Comment
I like this photo because the photographer uses a range of colour their work which inspires me to use more contrasting tones in my work and experiment further. It gives me an exotic vibe even though its a simple picture however I don't think there's a deep meaning behind the work but it is fun.

Connection
This image links with my project because I am going to be using a contrast of colours and different materials to experiment in my work. It will also give me a chance to get an idea of how my work will look using models and including Photoshop in my outcomes.
This photograph comes under the series of photographs ''Cosmic Surgery '' which describes her photos as '' out of this world ''
Photo Shoot 1
For my first shoot I am going to take a series of photos of a model against a neutral background inspired by my artist research on Alma Haser. I am then going to manipulate the image in photoshop by adding another layer and dropping a flower on the models face.

Final image
At this point in my project I've realised that the shoot involves my model didn't turn out exactly how I wanted . Because the colours I have used in my shoot were quite dull and my theme I chose involves using contrasting colors to create a more unique outcome, next time doing this shoot I will get my model to wear a brighter colour of clothing rather then black and use a more vibrant background to make It look more effective .

In this picture Lee Mckenna has combined her art and photography together and has used scrap materials from across the world to create a collage. I like the creativity shown through this image as she has tea bagged over her work to make it look antique.
Comment
I like this photo because it's a quite a unique piece of work created that is different to other photographers and almost is decorated with things that symbolize events or situations from the past . I also like her work because it inspires me to do something similar using her ideas such as a collage.
In this photo she didn't use bright colours so it gives an antique effect and creates an old look.
Connection
Lee Mckenna creates random books into a serious events that have happened in the past hr theme is to do with he news and what goes on around the world also to experiment with different materials to create extraordinary outcomes. Her work links to my work because my work is related to using different materials like Lee Mckenna does throughout her whole project.
Composition
The main focus of this photo is the black and white flower placed in the center of all the different tones of brown it catches my eye straight away because it gives me a train of thoughts as to why the photographer decided to chose this photo as the main prop of the image. This image as been took using a birds eye view with normal lighting nothing to extreme to take the attention off the book.

Katherine D Crone
Katherine specializes in graphic design and combines those with bookbinding techniques in her work. These works are visual journals. The images are transparent but are captured in book forms and rendered in photographs. I like her work because it gives a calm feeling to it.
Comment
I really am fond of this photo that Katherine has created because she has took a range of different tones of blue to create a relaxed affect to it , its unique because she has cut out and dyed her work and photographed her work to produce a different outcome. I would like to do something linked to this because it shows of different shades of colours

Katherine uses a different range of textures and materials to create a physical piece of photography, I really like her work because she experiments with her ideas that create a variety of different outcomes. She also places her work in glass boxes which brings out the contrast of colours more, using different materials she creates a picture within the whole piece this image gives the idea of an ocean or a sea view because of the light tones which go darker to portrait the water.

Developing my ideas further using materials
I am developing my ideas using materials by taking images of flowers which I am going to print out and experiment with by making them into a head dress. I've been researching different head dress shapes to help inspire my own ideas. I really like some shapes above but I am going to use colour to make it more effective.
Exam
For my exam I am going to be making three collages based on three different people inspired by the photographer Lee Mckenna as they use material in their work. To make it personal to me I am going to choose three people that mean a lot to me and I am going to collect materials that link to that person and add them to the collage. The first thing I need to do is to take a series of images of each person and then print the images out ready to put onto the collage.
Person number 1 will be my Best Friend Maham. The materials I will collect for that person is different outfits of different materials to show her love for fashion and colour.
Person number 2 will be my little Sister she enjoys learning about science so I will gather a range of science materials

Outcomes
Worst
In my opinion I disliked this photo yet again it wasn't taken in the right place and is to dark, It doesn't show the poem or the colours off well and gives a gloomy look
Best
My favourite picture has to be this one because it looks just perfect I like how the colours contrasted nicely together, the different ranges of pinks came together nicely and created the girly look I was hoping for It stands out from the rest of the pictures because it gives a bouncy yet a elegant atmosphere the exposure, white balance , aperture and depth of field were set correctly.

Worst
I'm not fond of this photo because It didn't show of the material techniques I produced within this outcome . I took this photo in the wrong place because the background was messy and looked silly also the photo had come out dark because there was to much light behind the photo.
Best
From this shoot this is my best image because there are many techniques I have applied in this piece, I love this image because it really brings out the colours and has a sharp look to it. It also gives a unique effect to the audience and gets across her interests using diffferent materials. I think it looks even better thwen most of my images because you can see the little details such as the poem

Worst
In this shoot i took a vary of different photos but this one is my worst because there's not a right amount of light and the flowers look to dark to even see the detail of the flowers which makes it a dull, sad and cold photo.
Best
This is my favourite picture out of the set images I have taken. I like this photo the most because the colour contrast of pink and purple really stand out and gives a warm feel to the flowers, the exposure was set perfectly and shows of all the detail of the flowers. One of the purposes of this outcome was to form a 3D look which has worked and gives it a full look I also love the neutral background behind the flowers as it adds a sophisticated and professional vibe.
Final Outcomes
Final collages
The exam question that I have chosen '' Materials '' has pulled me in a few of different directions it allowed me to explore with colour and using different materials to create a series of outcomes. In my exam I have linked materials and connections together. I collected a range of different objects that mean a lot to both of my models and got my inspiration from Lee Mckenna to make collages associated with my models according to their favorite things like colour, hobbies and even clothes. I also added a personal poem to get across their interests.
I decided I wanted to an extra collage to do more with natural materials, I made a collage to do with flowers because It shows not all materialistic things are manufactured and that some are natural resources. I also wanted to do this collage because even though I got my inspiration from Lee Mckenna I wanted to showcase my personal outcomes aswell.

Evaluation
I have decided to choose the exam question “ materials ” but explored deeper by experimenting with different ideas such as people, collages and materials. I like my theme because it allowed me to create a variety of outcomes using different techniques.
I have researched 3 photographers to take inspiration from and improve my ideas further which are Alma Haser, Katherine D’crone and Lee Mckenna . When looking at these photographers, I have noticed that they all have a unique style to their work and use creativity to show their ideas through the photos they have taken. I have enjoyed editing and adding my own touches also developing my images in Photoshop as I was able to explore new techniques and improve my skills.
Throughout my project I based my research on 3 main photographers, The photographer that caught my attention the most and interested me to explore further is Lee Mckenna, Lee mckenna is a special and different kind of photographer, she shows her love for photography through her creativity and art work . Lee Mckenna travels around the world and gathers a range of materials and puts together collages based on events occurring all over the world. This inspired me to approach my photography in a different manner just like her.
The most important thing I have learnt throughout doing this exam is even if the pictures didn’t look like the outcome I wanted to achieve I still had a go making my ideas into reality.
I believe that the most successful part of my project Is the range of different outcomes I achieved testing different techniques I was able to expand my knowledge of photoshop and devolop my ideas to fit my theme and enjoyed taking different directions with my choice of exam question.
Overall I enjoyed working on my exam because it allowed me to express my creativity through a variety of different outcomes, and explore a deeper meaning with my exam question '' materials ''.
